Kim Jong-il (1941–2011) was the supreme leader of North Korea from 1994 until his death. He succeeded his father, Kim Il-sung, establishing the world's first communist hereditary succession. Under his rule, North Korea pursued nuclear weapons development while the country experienced severe economic decline and a devastating famine in the mid-1990s that killed hundreds of thousands of people. His government maintained tight control over information and civil liberties, and he cultivated an extensive personality cult. He was known for his reclusive nature, love of cinema, and distinctive personal style. Upon his death, power passed to his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, continuing the Kim dynasty's rule over the country.
